Manual Lymphatic Drainage Specialist in Reading - Post Surgery - Lymphoedema - Lipoed
Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system is unable to effectively drain fluid from the tissues. This may be due to an underdeveloped or impaired lymphatic system from birth (Primary Lymphoedema), which can develop at any stage of life, or it may occur as a result of damage to the lymphatic system (Secondary Lymphoedema).
Secondary Lymphoedema commonly develops following surgery, radiotherapy or trauma, particularly where lymph nodes have been damaged or removed. This is frequently seen following cancer treatment.
Venous insufficiency can also contribute to swelling and may place additional strain on the lymphatic system, resulting in a condition known as phlebolymphoedema..
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can be beneficial both before and after surgery, helping to reduce swelling, support the body's natural healing processes and promote recovery. It is also an effective treatment following fractures, ligament injuries and sprains, helping to manage swelling and restore mobility more quickly.
Following cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, MLD can help minimise post-operative swelling and may reduce the risk of fibrosis (hardening of the tissues), supporting a smoother recovery and optimal results.
Deep Oscillation Therapy is also available and can be used alongside MLD to further enhance healing, reduce pain and inflammation, and support tissue repair.
Lipoedema is a chronic condition that causes an abnormal accumulation of fat, most commonly affecting the legs and, in some cases, the arms. It predominantly affects women and can lead to pain, tenderness, easy bruising and reduced mobility.
For more detailed information about lipoedema, please visit the website of the UK charity, Lipoedema UK.
Although Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) does not reduce the abnormal fat deposits associated with lipoedema, it can help manage the fluid that often accumulates within the tissues. By supporting lymphatic function and encouraging the movement of fluid, MLD may help reduce feelings of heaviness, improve comfort and support overall tissue health.
Lipoedema can sometimes progress to involve the lymphatic system, resulting in lipo-lymphoedema. Maintaining good lymphatic function is therefore an important part of long-term management.
The lymphatic system plays a vital role in maintaining the body's fluid balance and supporting the removal of waste products from the tissues. Working closely with the circulatory and immune systems, it helps transport fluid, proteins and cellular waste for processing and elimination by the body.
As an important part of the immune system, a healthy lymphatic system contributes to overall wellbeing and resilience.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle and deeply relaxing treatment that supports lymphatic function and encourages the movement of fluid throughout the body. Many clients leave feeling lighter, less sluggish and with an enhanced sense of wellbeing.
If you are looking to support your body's natural cleansing processes while enjoying a calming and restorative treatment, MLD offers a gentle and effective approach.
The exceptionally gentle nature of MLD makes it particularly suitable for those who may be sensitive to touch or who find that more vigorous therapies can leave them feeling worse. The treatment works without the need for deep pressure, allowing the body to relax while supporting its natural healing and recovery processes.
Many clients find that MLD helps them feel calmer, less tense and more comfortable. The deeply relaxing nature of the treatment may also help reduce stress, improve sleep quality and support overall wellbeing, all of which can be important when managing long-term conditions such as ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia.
Digestive issues are increasingly common and can have a significant impact on quality of life. Many clients seek support for symptoms associated with conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, bloating and digestive discomfort.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) provides a gentle, relaxing treatment that can help support the body's natural processes. Through its calming effect on the nervous system, MLD may help reduce stress and tension, which are often associated with digestive symptoms. It can also encourage bowel motility (peristalsis) and support the movement of fluid through the tissues.
While MLD is not a treatment for digestive diseases themselves, many clients report improvements in comfort, bloating and overall wellbeing as part of a holistic approach to managing their symptoms.
